My New Blog: Storybook Apothecary

Hi all,

I know we never got to hang out much and chat, but it’s likely because I’ve started up a new blog for my skincare line at Storybook Apothecary.wordpress.com. I do a lot of posts that are similar to the ones I used to post here, but with features on my own line, natural health and organic beauty. Come check it out here! – I’d love to have you!

Ciao!

I’ve had quite a passion for DIY beauty the past 2 years because it’s tons of fun, easy and quick, and much better for the environment than buying another product. Not to mention the fact that I already own way too many beauty products and have literally no more room (in my bathroom or budget) for even one more product. That being said, DIY beauty saves have offered me some of the quickest ways to cure that breakout, exfoliate your skin, brighten your skin tone and more.

Here are some of my favorite DIY Recipes:

  • Aspirin Acne Mask: Use 2-5 Uncoated Aspirin Tablets or Raw Willow Bark Powder mixed with your choice of water, witch hazel, vodka, milk, sake or champagne. Water is gentle, witch hazel helps absorb oil, vodka is astringent, sake brightens and lightens skin tone, milk exfoliates with lactic acids, and champagne brightens and feels luxurious while toning skin.
  • Raw Pumpkin Enzyme Facial Peel: Apply raw pumpkin in a thin layer over skin. Leave on for 5-10 minutes, depending on your sensitivity level. It feels just like a facial enzyme peel you would get at a spa only a little gentler given that it’s raw and natural. You can purchase raw pumpkin in a can at your local grocery store or, if pumpkin is in season, you may mash pumpkin yourself. You may also add a carrier oil (sweet almond, olive oil, coconut oil, etc.) to dilute to active enzymes if you have very sensitive skin. Note: if going outside, rinse and apply sunblock.
  • Oatmeal Detox Face Mask: Mix equal parts oatmeal and honey (usually 1-2 tablespoons of each is enough) and apply. Leave on 15 minutes then rinse. Oatmeal absorbs oil and dirt while honey moisturizes and disinfects. Do this in the kitchen as oatmeal tends to flake off and get everywhere. It’s quite messy, but worth it!
  • Moisturizing Avocado Hair and Face Mask: Mix 1 avocado with your choice of milk, sake, natural oil (coconut or olive oil work well), or champagne. Leave on 15 minutes then rinse. If you are using by itself or with a natural oil, this can also double as a hair mask
  • Milk Toner: Use a small amount of milk on a cotton round and apply to face directly. Leave on until you feel it dry then rinse or leave on for continued exfoliation and brightening. Note: if going outside, rinse and apply sunblock.
  • Vodka, Sake or Champagne Toner: Use alone on a cotton round and apply to face as you would a normal toner. No need to rinse these. Vodka brightens and tones, sake brightens and whitens skin tone and champagne tones, brightens and firms skin.
  • Egg White Face Mask: Use the egg whites of 1 raw egg and apply a thin layer to your face, avoiding eye area. Leave on 10-15 minutes or until dry then either peel off or rinse off. This mask works to tighten and firm skin.
  • Natural Oils Hair Mask: Choose one or three natural oils in combination in any amount as needed and apply to hair. Leave on as desired or for 15-30 minutes then rinse. Be sure to shampoo after. This adds moisture, shine and gloss to hair.

I recently purchased the Skin79 BB cream. If you are unfamiliar with these, a BB cream is a type of Asian make up with skin care benefits. Originally created in Germany for post surgery patients to help heal and protect the skin, BB cream is both pigmented and protective. It rose to fame in Korea when south Korean celebrities received treatments and BB cream from their doctor to protect their skin. Thru noticed it greatly improved their complexion. After a time, companies began selling their own versions of the BB cream to the public. BB cream stands for blemish balm. BB cream can be touted as having various benefits including whitening, sunscreen, moisturizer, acne healing or all of the above. In fact, another reason BB cream became so popular is due to the fact that they combined all skin care and facial make up steps into one product.
After discovering how popular this is in Asia, I decided to try Skin79 BB cream for myself.
My first impression if the Pink Skin79 BB cream was that it has a really grey color. It does blend okay with my skin after it sinks in for a few minutes and has a really silky texture that makes application and blending a breeze. It also comes in a convenient pump container so it is really sanitary to use and there’s no waiting product. It lasts a long time and works well. It does seem to give decent coverage, maybe light to medium, but as for the skin care benefits, I don’t think I’m so convinced. There seemed to be a nice effect on my skin while wearing this BB cream, but nothing long term. All in all, I really enjoy wearing this on days I don’t want to do full foundation and for $20, it was a really good value for the price.

I have seen so many videos and blogs reviewing the Origins Skin Care line that when I finally got to try some of their products for myself, I was pretty psyched. Some of them seemed to live up to a little bit of the hype, but for the most part I was kind of disappointed.

The Origins Brighter by Nature Skin Tone Correcting Serum was a product I had been dying to try. It seems to get really great reviews both on YouTube and on various beauty blogs, but I really don’t share the enthusiasm for this product. I have oily to combination skin that is very sensitive and reactive so sometimes any little thing irritates my skin. I have mild discoloration in my skin tone that I was hoping to even out with this serum. Although this serum has a really nice smell and a smooth texture, it seems to leave a slight film on the skin like it takes a bit to absorb into the skin. It also seemed to make my skin look kinda greasy, which I’m not too fond of. For normal skin types or drier skin types, I think this product may be more suited for. I saw some mild improvement in my skin tone, which may account for the fruit extracts in this serum, but overall my skin looked the same. I was kind of bummed because this product was the one I was the most excited to try.

The Origins Never A Dull Moment Brightening Facial Cleanser is just okay for me. Although I really love the banana scent, this cleanser doesn’t do anything extraordinary that makes me love it. It does an okay job on the cleaning end and brightens okay, but seems to be a little drying. I do think the texture of this cleanser is nice, but it really fell short of what it claims to do.

Origins Clear Improvement Activated Charcoal Mask claims to detox and clear the pores of dirt and debris while tightening pores and clearing breakouts. For someone who has frequent stress and hormonal breakouts, I found this mask to be pretty decent. While it’s nothing magical or immediate, it does seem to clear the pores and tighten them a bit. It also seems to clear breakouts somewhat, but not completely. This mask is a little drying so using a moisturizer after using this is a good idea. Overall, not bad.

This Origins Ginger Souffle Whipped Body Cream is awesome. It smells REALLY amazing and moisturizes the skin really well. I have chronic dry skin with patchiness and this really helped to moisturize my skin. Not only that, but the ginger in this cream seems to really brighten my skin. I really love it for my decollete and neck area also because it seemed to help firm my skin a bit too. This is a really incredible cream that I highly recommend.

The Origins Smoothing Souffle Whipped Body Cream is an alright cream. It works well enough to moisturize normal skin and has a nice minty scent, but I don’t know how well it would work for someone with dry patches like me. It doesn’t have the tingle that the Ginger Souffle does, but it’s alright. Honestly, I think you could get the same quality body cream at the drugstore for half the price so I’d pass on this one if you have dry skin on your body and need good moisture.

Overall, I was sort of disappointed in Origins line. I really love their packaging and their products seem nice with what they claim to do, but it seems like a lot of the products fall short on their claims. I wish they worked as they promise to on their packaging, but they did not seem to work that well for me. I know a lot of vloggers on YouTube love Origins, but for me, Juice Beauty’s products were way better. Stay tuned for my Juice Beauty Review.

Vitamins are a great way to achieve perfect skin and optimum health. Aside from their beauty benefits, vitamins can help you to look younger and even assist with weight loss, disease prevention, the prevention of premature aging, and the list goes on. Vitamins can be obtained either by taking a daily multi-vitamin or through natural food sources. Though still controversial and highly debated, many claim vitamin supplements have shown harmful side effects. Gaining your daily intake of vitamins through food sources and a healthy balanced diet is usually agreed upon as the most effective way to get the vitamins that your body needs to be healthy. I’ve compiled a list of vitamins and their various beauty benefits for you below:

  • Vitamin A: Commonly known in skin care as Retinol or Retinyl Palmitate, Vitamin A is considered somewhat of a miracle vitamin. Not only does vitamin A help reverse and prevent free radical damage such as fine lines, wrinkles, age/sun spots, scarring and discoloration, vitamin A is also a great acne fighter. Ever heard of Retin-A? Guess what’s it main active ingredient is? You guessed it, vitamin A. Other great benefits of using vitamin A are that is fights dandruff, dry skin, assists with cell turnover (healing, collagen production, metabolism of cells), strengthen hair and nails, give natural shine and gloss to hair, and help to fight or prevent various skin conditions and illnesses. Some like to take a vitamin A supplement, but great food sources for vitamin A are Carrots, Tomatoes, Spinach, Milk, Fish Liver Oils (Cod Liver Oil- available in tablets or liquid form), Lemons, Oranges, Grapefruits and various Leafy Green Vegetables.
  • B Vitamins: There are many different B vitamins in this group from B1 all the way up to B12 and then some. These various B vitamins can do specific things from assisting with hair growth or preventing hair loss, conditioning you hair, skin and nails, acne, evening skin tones out, and improving circulation in the skin and body which can assist with weight loss or prevent weight gain by increasing or maintaining a fast metabolism. Aside from that, B vitamins keep your skin moisturized, prevent and treat various skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, maintain healthy bones to prevent osteoporosis, prevent anemia, smooth skin texture, protect from free radicals, thickens and hydrates hair and nails, and assists with the healing process of skin due to cuts, acne, dryness or other skin conditions. B Vitamins are gained from a variety of sources including Leafy Green Vegetables, Whole Grains (Breads, Cereals, etc.), Beans, Wheat Germ, and various Nuts. B Vitamins may also be obtained by taking a vitamin B complex supplement.
  • Vitamin C: Vitamin C is one of the more well known vitamins, especially for anti-aging uses. Vitamin C assists with protection not only from free radical damage, but also is a potent vitamin that helps to tighten and firm skin, correct skin discoloration, heal scarring, fight acne, and increase cell turnover to fill in fine lines and wrinkles. Vitamin C is gained by eating any and all Citrus Fruits including Lemons and Oranges, various Leafy Green Vegetables, Broccoli, Spinach, Tomatoes, and more. Vitamin C may also be obtained by taking a supplement.
  • Vitamin D: A powerful antioxidant (free radical protector), Vitamin D offers a variety of benefits including making sure you have strong pearly white teeth and strong bones and nails. Other benefits include fighting off various forms of cancer, depression, and even diabetes. Vitamin D is a bit more complicated in terms of getting your daily doses. The main source of vitamin D is through soaking up sunlight for 30 minutes a day without sun protection. I know what you’re thinking, Aren’t we supposed to be preventing sun protection??! Well, yes and no. Your body needs sunlight at least 15 minutes a day in order to synthesize the formation of vitamin D in your body. Ever notice you get the blues when you’re out of the sun for too long or notice you feel better under the sun? That’s because your body actually physically needs it! Not only that, but it prevents depression and makes us feel happier. Other easier sources of vitamin D include Milk, Egg Yolks, Fortified Cereals and various Fish including Mackerel, Sardines, Salmon and Tuna.
  • Vitamin E: Vitamin E is also a more well known vitamin for its health and beauty benefits. Known and used in many skin care formulations as a potent antioxidant and skin moisturizer, vitamin E soothes, heals and exfoliates skin. Vitamin E provides good moisture to hair and nails while strengthening them to prevent breakage. It can also be effective in treating acne, discoloration, dry skin, and preventing fine lines and wrinkles and skin cancer. Vitamin E can even minimize the damage caused from smoking. Derived from a variety of sources, vitamin E can be obtained from the consumption of Olive Oil, Various Nuts including Almonds and Peanuts, Spinach, Broccoli, Edamame or Soybeans, Kiwis, Mangoes and Tomatoes. Vitamin E can also be applied topically in a liquid form or through the consumption of a supplement.
  • Vitamin K: Vitamin K assists with improving skin elasticity, prevent and treat hyperpigmentation/discoloration in the skin due to age spots and healing dark circles due to broken capillaries (little bumps under eyes), and improving fine lines and wrinkles. It has been linked to the prevention of various diseases including Cancer, Diabetes, Alzheimer’s, Bulimia, and Osteoporosis. Vitamin K can be obtained by consuming various Leafy Green Vegetables such as Spinach, Kale, Broccoli, and Swiss Chard. It may also be found in Cabbage, Avocadoes, Kiwis, Romaine Lettuce, Soybeans and Strawberries. It may also be obtained by taking a supplement.

There are also other vitamins and nutrients that may be of benefit to your health and beauty efforts. Most of these may be obtained through food sources, but if you choose to take a daily supplement(s), please consult your physician before doing so in order to ensure your daily amount is correct and safe for your body.

Good luck with all your health and beauty efforts!

Feel free to comment with any questions or concerns; I will answer them to the best of my ability.

Yeah Yeah…I know what you’re going to say: Where the HECK have YOU BEEN? Not blogging for WEEKS!?! Okay, I won’t pretend like you all even noticed I was gone or maybe someone would comment once in awhile to remind me I’m not speaking to myself in type format… :(

Anyway, for my own satisfaction, I’ll write on to document my life in the hopes that future fame and fortune will reach me and someone will have the furious need to research my life and find this. Yep.

In 2011, I plan on beginning a series of Vlogs (Youtube Videos) for a variety of things.

#1. To review, discuss and complain or something of that origin about beauty. Basically the same as here in speak format rather than type. Anything beauty related and I’ll pose a comment, whether you like it or not. :P

#2. Monologues. Yeah, I’m an actor, but I’m out of practice and therefore plan on filming myself doing monologues. I shall force you to witness the progress, again, whether you like it or not. Feel free to click the X in the right hand corner…NO WAIT! My list isn’t finished!>:-/

#3. Shorties. Short films will be uploaded for your viewing pleasure, not necessarily on my youtube channel, but I’ll be sure to mention them in a video and link you. For more information to this end, visit Kumiko Productions.

#4. Singing. Yep I shall sing to you all the songs that I like and you can like, laugh or…whatever. It’s kind of for my own practicing purposes and kind of to get over my own stage-y fright.

#5. Movie Reviews & Good Music. This is reserved for all the great films I’ve seen lately, what I thought and yeah. And also great music, I’ll recommend to you for whichever and yep.

#6. Dieting, Fitness, Health, etc. If you have seen my other blog, NewbMartialArtist, you’ll know my bf teaches martial arts (Amer. Kenpo) and that he had begun to instruct me in American Kenpo. We stopped for awhile due to a few things, but will begin again very soon. Follow me on NewbMartialArtist Blog for more on this.

Well that’s about it for now. More later. Thank you for reading! :]

Congratulations to the winners:

I am very enthusiastic about healthy living and eating a variety of whole foods as well as exercising regularly to feel, look & experience life in the most fulfilling ways. Because of this, I am constantly on the hunt for the latest shop or farmer’s market where I might find the most delicious and affordable selections of fruits & vegetables.

I live in Riverside, CA, which is a pretty interesting place to be for healthy living and the arts. I recently discovered this small health organics grocery store called Goodwin’s Organics and thought I would check it out. Upon my visit, I found this place to be a complete scam. While I love health food and organic grocery options as much as the next health food connoisseur, I really found this place to be a complete rip-off. For people who simply seek a place to shop that offers healthy food options, I find that there is no need or reason why they should have to shop at places such as Goodwin’s Organics only to be over charged for ridiculously overpriced items, offered a slim and sad selection of fruits and vegetables that do not look one appealing in the least and lastly, a small cafeteria style restaurant with overpriced food that any person could, not only cook to taste and be more appealing, but could also make themselves and save money.

Riverside offers a wide variety of options when it comes to healthy living that has nothing to do with shopping at any of these chain health grocery stores that are appealing at first look, but not a good long term option.

Here are a few options to consider INSTEAD of Shopping at your local over priced health/organics grocery:

Sun Organic Farm is a great option as you can buy online, by phone or fax or even by mail if you wish to do so. They have a wide variety of items, all organic, but the low part about this one is that they don’t carry any produce or meats so you can only purchase dried foods here.

Farm Fresh To You is a pretty convenient option for those who want to go the natural organic route, but have little time to shop or hand pick everything or those who really do not want to cook. Farm Fresh To You has package deal options that you can choose from such as Mixed Veggies Only, Mixed Fruits Only, Fruits & Veggies Mix, and even variants of these for those who want only produce that requires little to no cooking. They even offer healthy snack packs. This farm is family owned and ran, but the downside is that they may only deliver to the southern California area.

Shop Organic is closer to shopping at a normal organic grocery store chain than any of these, but I like that they sell a wide variety of items. From personal care products to dried and preserved foods to vegan, gluten-free, raw and kosher foods, Shop Organic has some cool options that are worth checking out.

Diamond Organics is a great option for organics. They have a little something of EVERYTHING. The items they have available include produce, meat, dairy, spirits (alcohol) and other various dried, preserved and canned items. They also have a wide variety of meal options available for purchase that include dishes from cultures around the world. They also offer overnight home delivery nationwide.

Lastly, Local Harvest is a great option that helps you either Shop Online if you wish to or locate a family owned farm closest to you. They have family farms across the USA in their directory that are located by plugging in your zip code.

3rd & 4th Place: 1 Natural Perfume

I shop on Etsy every now and then and I recently discovered this really awesome skincare natural product line. Rainwater Botanicals is really great and their products are high quality AND do what they claim to.

For anyone who wants a healthy, natural lifestyle that feeds your body only natural ingredients and refuses to pay outrageous prices to do so, Rainwater Botanicals is a great choice.

Based in Washington state, Rainwater Botanicals makes anything from natural body and facial soaps, aluminum free deodorants, and healing salve to anti-aging and anti-acne serums and body lotion as well as a few hair care products and natural perfume. They have really great, quality products with clean, nice looking packaging. Any of their items would make great gifts.

Rainwater Botanicals carries various Aluminum Free Deodorants that not only help with the issues of perspiration and B.O., but also smell delicious and last ALL DAY LONG. They are affordable, especially for being organic and all natural. These deodorants last a long time and are made with all natural and organic essential and carrier oils that nourish, protect and heal your skin. I purchased two: Jasmine Wind for myself and Patchouli Citrus for my boyfriend. I love mine; it’s a very floral type scent though, not recommended for those who like more subtle scents. For subtle scent lovers, you may want to try Lavender Vanilla instead. My boyfriend ended up really liking the Patchouli Citrus, as it doesn’t smell womanly AT ALL, but instead has a unisex neutral and very earthy scent that works well for men, especially those will strong B.O. In fact, my boyfriend loves it so much he showed it to his brother and now his brother wants one!

Next, I purchased the Troubled Skin Facial Soap. This soap is a godsend. Not only does it smell so DELICIOUS that I almost want to eat it, it contains powerful ingredients that have definitely helped improve the condition of my skin. I have oily/combination acne prone sensitive skin so that is really saying a lot. Almost all drugstore products will break me out immediately; there are not a whole lot of ingredients that help my skin unless they are organic and even then. This soap feels incredible to use, lathers nicely and cleans my skin really well without making it feel tight or overly dry. Containing neem seed and organic hemp seed oils , tea tree EO, sweet orange EO, and clary sage EO  in a French green clay base. These ingredients all work very well in helping to keep my skin clean and toned, hydrated and clear from any outbreaks. I love LOVE this Troubled Skin Facial Soap!

Aside from a Troubled Skin Care Line of Items to help oily, Acne prone skin problems, they also have a Nourishing Skin Care Line of Items that assists aging, mature and/or normal to dry skin types. Then they have a general line for Normal Skin Types.

I also ordered their Herbal Relief Body Cream for Dry, Itchy Skin. This cream is so nourishing and definitely relieves my itchiness. I have dry skin patches on my arms and this really helps with the annoying itchiness as well as the moisturizing. Not only that, but it smells really pleasant and is not too heavy or thick so it doesn’t break me out. There are a variety of healing ingredients in this cream, but here is some of what they say about this awesome cream, ” Organic herbs, butters, extracts and oils known for their effectiveness against psoriasis and eczema are combined with organic aloe, hydrogen peroxide and msm to produce a sweet smelling cream that helps in the topical treatment of these skin conditions.”

Aside from all the items I ordered, I received this Herbal Healing Salve for free. This was actually one of my favorite items. Even though it’s sold as a healing salve, I actually used it on my acne as a spot treatment and it worked REALLY well. It comes in a chap stick lip balm tube so it was really simple and easy to apply to my face and actually very sanitary as well. I am the type that hates touching my face because I’m just that paranoid that I will break out so this is a great item to have on hand. It worked so well for me that I used it all already and need to re-order as the little chap stick tube went really quickly. This salve contains ingredients such as comfrey, calendula, golden seal, chamomile, lavender, myrrh resin, and others essential oils. I definitely recommend this Herbal Healing Salve as it worked extremely well on my skin. It would probably work well as an ointment to use on kids’ cuts as it’s very gentle and does not burn or anything.

The smell of this Natural Acne Spot Treatment really reminds me of black licorice in an herbal sort of way. It doesn’t sting going on even the most pronounced zit and has seemed to lessen the redness a LOT, but no word yet on how it will effect the overall elimination of acne, but then again it’s only been 2 days so will update you guys on that soon! Update: This spot treatment works well on acne break outs, but for someone like me who is frequently battling break outs, I really don’t recommend it. It’s not cost effective in this small little roll on bottle. While I love that it diminishes break outs fairly quickly, it’s gone before you know it. I WOULD recommend this for people who get less frequent breakouts as it works well, but use sparingly. I wish they sold this in a larger size. It would be more cost efficient in my opinion.

I love this serum. I don’t know how well it works yet, but this Skin Repair Serum really moisturizes well and goes well with the spot treatment. It smells lovely though I cannot place the scent exactly. It goes on smooth and absorbs into the skin nicely though it does take like 2-5 minutes to absorb so if you don’t have time in the morning to sit and wait for it to absorb before applying makeup, I recommend using it only as a night repair treatment. Nice so far, will update on the wrinkle, acne effects. Update: This serum seems to help repair wrinkles in terms of fine lines. It definitely helps with the appearance of  the skin and helps to smooth the texture and overal coloring of the skin. I really love it as a night time moisturizer. It does not seem to clear up acne one way or the other, but it also does not irritate my skin or break me out and that’s always worth mentioning when you have reactive skin like me!

The Dead Sea Salt & Coconut Moisturizing Hair Spray is really a toss up. I think because my hair fluctuates between oily and normal that it can make my hair look really great  really oily depending on the day and weather. I think this would do wonders for someone with consistently dry or damaged hair and the scent is really nice if you’re a coconut fan like me. It’s funny as even though I don’t need much extra moisture, I  still reach for this every morning just to spritz over my locks and give my hair a nice scent. I would definitely buy this again for the scent and moisture. Smells heavenly.

I LOVE this Lavender & Shea Soap. The scent is not too strong, but very pleasant and lovely. I love bathing with this soap bar. It’s soft but exfoliating and I give this bar of soap credit for helping my perpetually peeling shoulders stay moisturized. This is the first day in like FOREVER that my dry patches look like they might be going away. All I have to say is hallelujah because it’s been the bane of my existence!

**I was not paid to write this blog, nor am I affiliated with Rainwater Botanicals in any way other than that I love their product line. I was not given any free items other than the free healing salve sample and have chosen to review the products above at my own free will.**

I recently saw The Social Network, a film about the creation of Facebook, starring Jesse Eisenberg as it’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg. This film is based on a book written about the events surrounding the ultimate creation of Facebook entitled The Accidental Billionaires, which involves 2 lawsuits, 3 prodigies and a break up. Although I found the film itself to be compelling, there is most probably a lot of dramatization in the film as opposed to real life.

The film itself begins with the breakup of Mark Zuckerberg and his girlfriend Ericka Allbright, a B.U. student. This scene in itself hooks you into the story and its characters immediately with its rapid fire dialogue and distinct characters. I won’t say exactly why they break up, but it definitely sets the tone of the story and gives motivation to our anti-hero for why he goes on ultimately create what we know as Facebook.com today. This opening scene is very interesting to watch, but as to whether or not the girlfriend actually exists/existed in real life, it seems yet unknown and given the fact that the real Mark Zuckerberg refuses to comment on the movie at all, it seems unlikely that we will ever know unless some nosy self-righteous journalist takes it upon their self to find out which, let’s be honest, they usually do.

After the subsequent break up of Mark and his girlfriend, he goes on to blog angrily about it and then creates Face Smash, which rates the female students of Harvard  in terms of hotness, gains notoriety for hacking the school’s directory network and crashing it completely after getting more than 22,000 hits in the first two hours and for which he goes against the school board for and is put on academic probation.

After various events which will not be revealed here ( go watch the film yourself, thanks.), Mark comes up with the idea for a social networking site that is exclusive to Harvard and allows them to contact and keep in touch with their friends and calls it The Facebook. This is after 2 rich, barely notable twins accost him to build them a dating site called Harvard Connect, to which he pretty much agrees, yet ignores them while working on The Facebook. This leads to the first lawsuit. This is the only part of the movie I think is actually based in reality. I think these rich boy twins got mad that someone else got their first and that it wasn’t them. They got a settlement most probably because they had incredible lawyers and for no other reason.

The Facebook (obviously) is a complete hit and gets 650 members on the first day. It keeps gaining and gaining members and Mark and his friends, Eduardo Saverin and Dustin Moscowitz all decide to expand to other college campuses such as Browne, Boston U & Stanford. The list goes on and on and soon Mark and Eduardo travel to New York to meet with Ad Agencies and investors. This ultimately leads them to meet with Sean Parker, the founder of Napster, who completely charms Mark, develops a bit of a rivalry (or so it seems) with Eduardo, and tells them to drop the “The” in “The Facebook”and simply call it “Facebook.” Although not spoken of in the film, Sean Parker does try to sue Mark later saying since it was his idea to drop the “The” that this somehow gives him claim to Facebook. It doesn’t, hence the lack of a settlement for him, although he still owns approximately 7% of Facebook to this day.

After meeting with Sean Parker, Mark decides to spend his summer break in California working on Facebook, meets up with Sean Parker and ultimately gets a very large investment to open the offices of Facebook. A falling out ensues between Eduardo and Mark after shares of Eduardo’s stake in Facebook get diluted due to new investors and Eduardo decides to sue Mark. Thus, the back and forth timeline of The Social Network film between the mediation of the two lawsuits (Winklevoss AKA douche bag rich twins and the suit with Eduardo) and the events that led up to both respective suits. It’s very much a “Let’s find out how we got here” kind of story telling. Very quick wit, clever, and engaging for the audience.

In the end, Mark settles with both the Winklevoss twins and Eduardo and thus we have Facebook today.

Falling out also occurs between Mark and Sean Parker as Sean ends up getting arrested for Cocaine possession (proving Eduardo right) and generally being found out to be who he really is: a complete d-bag who tries to ride coattails of others.

All in all, the movie is awesome. It is worth watching once or even twice to completely understand it and entertaining the whole way through. Although, as stated before, this probably is not based in too much truth, so enjoy the ride but don’t take it literally. After all, it’s based on a book written about the events surrounding the creation of Facebook by one of the investors of Facebook. How truthful can it be if written by a businessman?

After watching some interviews with Mark Zuckerberg, I learned some surprising things about him. He really is kind of an enigma, though, and frequently dodges questions posed to him by journalists. Really though, can you blame him? I’d probably do the same if everyone hounded me all the time.

Here’s some things you may or may not know about him:

  • Although he is shown as a Harvard Alum on Facebook, he dropped out and never graduated
  • In the film, it is implied that he was a computer science major when, in fact, he majored in Psychology (his mother is a psychologist)
  • His girlfriend, Ericka Allbright in the film, may or may not have existed at all
  • In 2009, he was the youngest billionaire in the world; in 2010, his friend Dustin Moscowitz takes his place in this title as he is 8 days younger than Mark.
  • You know the manner of answering and question dodging Jesse Eisenberg adopts in the film? Yeah, that’s real. He does that. Kudos to Eisenberg for hitting that spot on.

Priceless Quotes from the Movie:

Erica Albright (Rooney Mara): “You are going to go through life thinking that girls don’t like you because you’re a nerd. And I want you to know from the bottom of my heart that that won’t be true. It’ll be because you’re an asshole.”

Mark Zuckerberg: “As for any charges stemming from the breach of security, I believe I deserve some sort of recognition from this Ad Board.”
Administrator: “I’m sorry”
Mark Zuckerberg: “Yes.”
Administrator: “I don’t understand.”
Mark Zuckerberg: “Which part?”
Administrator: “You believe you deserve some recognition?”
Mark Zuckerberg: “I pointed out some pretty gaping holes in your system.”

Stoned Girl: “So what do you do?”
Sean Parker Parker (Justin Timberlake): “I’m an entrepreneur.”
Stoned Girl: “You’re unemployed.”
Sean Parker Parker: “I wouldn’t say that.”
Stoned Girl: “What would you say?”
Sean Parker Parker: “That I’m an entrepreneur.”
Stoned Girl: “What was your latest preneur?”
Sean Parker: “Well I founded an internet company that let college kids download and share music for free.”
Stoned Girl: “Kinda like Napster?”
Sean Parker: “Exactly like Napster.”
Stoned Girl: “What do you mean?”
Sean Parker: “I founded Napster.”
Stoned Girl: “Sean Parker founded Napster.”
Sean Parker: “Nice to meet you.”
Stoned Girl: “You’re Sean Parker?”
Sean Parker: “Ahhh you see, the shoe’s on the other, uh, table which has turned.”

Lawyer: “Mr. Zuckerberg, do I have your full attention?”
Mark Zuckerberg: “No.”
Lawyer: “Do you think I deserve it?”
Mark Zuckerberg: “What?”
Lawyer: “Do you think I deserve your full attention?”
Mark: “I had to swear an oath before we began this deposition, and I don’t want to perjure myself, so I have a legal obligation to say no.”
Lawyer: “Okay…no. You don’t think I deserve your attention.”
Mark Zuckerberg: “I think if your clients want to sit on my shoulders and call themselves tall, they have the right to give it a try, but there’s no requirement that I enjoy sitting here listening to people lie. You have part of my attention – you have the minimum amount. The rest of my attention is back at the offices of Facebook, where my colleagues and I are doing things that no one in this room, including and especially your clients, are intellectually or creatively capable of doing. Did I adequately answer your condescending question?”
