Although aging is inevitable, we can put our best effort forward and try to prolong it as long as possible. There is no permanent solution to the aging of your skin other than a facelift, botox or some other kind of surgery, there are ways to keep your skin looking healthy and radiant for the best possible you.

1. Cleanse: Cleansing is very important. When choosing a cleanser, it is important to choose one that skin type and any skin conditions you may have. Therefore if you have oily skin, normal skin, combination skin, dry skin or sensitive skin, choose a cleanser that notes this on the bottle before purchasing. It is also important if you have any skin conditions such as eczema or acne that you choose based on those needs. Your cleanser should be free of any irritants as these will only dry out your skin and age your skin more quickly. Make sure your cleanser is pH balanced and full of good ingredients for your skin’s needs.You should follow cleansing with the use of a toner as this will remove any excess dirt from your skin as well as restore whatever moisture was stripped from your skin during cleansing.

2. Moisturize: The second step in your skincare regimen is moisturizing. Moisturizing is essential to anti-aging. If you have oily to oily combination skin, this does NOT mean that you should never moisturize. Although certain creams may be too heavy for your skin type, you still need to restore the moisture back to your skin to protect and nourish your skin, preventing premature aging and overly dry, irritated skin. Those with oily or oily combination skin as well as oily or normal to sensitive skin, especially breakout prone skin should refrain from using heavy creams and instead opt in for a gel based moisturizer or a water based one. This will ensure you get the moisture that you need without the added heaviness on your skin, which may irritate or produce too much oil or shininess on your skin, therefore causing a breakout or other skin issue. For those with normal or dry skin, creams or gels are okay, but make sure if you have especially dry skin to pay special attention to moisturizers with extra strength moisturizing benefits.

3. Treat: It is important to treat whatever skin conditions you may have, especially acne and/or wrinkles. For wrinkles on mature skin, be sure to either use a moisturizer with anti-aging benefits or otherwise an anti-wrinkle serum or cream,whichever you prefer. I personally prefer serums as they are usually safe to use for all skin types and less heavy on the skin. As for acne, an acne treatment gel on your breakouts is important to tame redness, irritation or other symptoms and root problems causing your breakouts.Some ingredients that are beneficial for both wrinkles and acne include but are not limited to niacinamide, retinol, retinyl palmitate, resveratrol, and DMAE.For any irritation, redness, or other inflammatory conditions, ingredients such as chamomile, green tea, lavender, and salicylic acid are all calming to the skin. In terms of salicylic acid, if you have especially sensitive skin, make sure the content of salicylic acid is below 10% as it may cause drying.

4. Protect: Lastly, protect your skin. All of it. This means not only your face, but also your neck and decollete area/chest, arms, legs and any other exposed skin not protected by clothing. This is important as it maintains the elasticity and firmness of your skin as well as the skin’s texture. Remember that consistency is key and you should use a body lotion with an SPF 15 or more on your body (I use a body lotion with SPF rather than two separate lotions/sunscreens as it cuts down on time) and an SPF 30 or more on your face. Also, in terms of your face, if you use a moisturizer with SPF 15 then also layer than with another light sunscreen, this adds a layer of protection to your skin. All of this will prevent premature aging and ensure your skin is in the best possible condition that it can be.
