Idan Raichel Project is a collaborative musical group from Israel. Well, kind of. You see, the founder of this group, Idan Raichel, is from Israel, but his musical collaborators are always changing and have come from such far and wide places as Ethiopia, India and Africa. Many of the songs are sang in Hebrew, but some feature Spanish songs, Indian throat singing (known as katajjaq, pirkusirtuk or nipaquhiit and also by other names as it changes by region), and various types of chanting. I find their music to be an almost spiritual experience. Their music is not only relaxing and thought provoking, but beautiful (if you do not know Hebrew, their lyrics can be translated here) and deep. Their lyrics almost always promote love, unity and self reflection which makes this music perfect for meditation, exercise and yoga. I personally find it suits me most at night when I have writer’s block or trouble figuring out characters for a script. Their music is nothing less than moving for its beautiful sounds and its message of peace, compassion and acceptance to all the people of the world. This is what I love most about them.
